Wii Sports the Most Popular Game of All Time ... Maybe

VG Chartz, which tracks the business side of gaming, has declared Wii Sports the most successful video game of all time.

Wii Sports is admittedly a very cool little mini-game collection, but even though there are admittedly people who buy a Wii and find Wii Sports so entertaining that they don't bother to buy anything else, this is a rather shaky claim. Wii Sports is in this position because it is "bundled" with the Nintendo Wii, which means if you buy a Wii, you wind up with this game. And according to VG Chartz, that means that you are buying the game along with the console.

I don't see it like that. The truth is, the Wii is sold not as the "Wii Console Bundled with Wii Sports," but just as the Wii. And it says "including Wii Sports" on the box, which suggests that it's a free bonus. Declaring the game the most popular of all time is akin to declaring Din Din Wo (Little Child) by Habib Koité and Bamada one of the best selling songs of all times because it's in the Sample Music folder of Windows Vista. Let's face it; no one bought Vista because they wanted the songs in the Sample Music folder.

VG Chartz says it isn't fair to not count a game because it is sold in a bundle, but I'd say a list in which the top 10 games of all times are all Nintendo games that were at some point bundled with Nintendo gaming systems is hardly fair to all the games that people went out and bought on purpose.
