Nintendo Releases Wii News Channel

Friday January 26, 2007
For those of you that haven't booted up your Wii today, you're in for a treat. After a month or two of waiting, Nintendo has released an update that unlocks the Wii News Channel. The News Channel pulls news articles from the Associated Press, and comes with a nifty map feature that shows you exactly where each news item is taking place. Browsing the news this way is somewhat nifty, but probably won't fundamentally change how you learn about the world. As of yet the News service does not provide much in the way of multimedia capability or any way to follow up on related stories, making the Wii web browser a potentially more versatile, if less succinct, way to read the news. While more features are always nice, it doesn't have the same level of usefulness that Wii Weather does, which presents information in a way that's not only fun but actually slightly more convenient than the way we normally get it. Wii News is cool, because interacting with the Wii is sorta cool no matter what you're doing, but unlike the weather I'll probably stick to my computer for reading about things beyond gaming.
