Kotaku reports that while the Wii U will play Wii games, it will not play GameCube games. Apparently backward compatibility only goes so far. I'm fine with that; I've still got my GameCube in a closet somewhere, I think.

Actually, I am not happy about that! I enjoy collecting older games, and it’s great that I’ve been able to pick up games for the GameCube and play them on my Wii. It won’t stop me form picking up a Wii U eventually, but it is a shame in my humble opinion.
I suspect they just didn’t want to put in GameCube controller ports. I always thought they should have found a way to play GC games using the classic controller, then there would have been no issue, and they could easily have made the Wii U compatible with the GC.
I don’t think it’s a problem for the most Wii fans. And for backwards compatibility: Why stay with the old when coming with something new?
Most people sell the older console when they buy a new one. Only the hardcore fans I know still have their gamecubes…
