The British magazine "Which? Computing" says chores are, minute for minute, better exercise than the Wii Fit, according to The Telegraph. And both are way less effective in burning calories than a treadmill.
I've no doubt that's true. It has been reported before that the Wii Fit's exercise benefits are suspect. It's certainly not the best workout you can get on the Wii (I enumerate the best here).
On the other hand, how fun are chores? Sure, you'll get more exercise scrubbing the bathroom sink for 10 minutes than playing Wii Fit for 10 minutes, but which one are you more likely to do for an hour? The reason Wii Fit Plus is a better workout than the original Wii Fit is primarily because it is more fun and thus will have you working out more time. In the same way, what's more fun, a treadmill or the Wii Fit? (Hint: it's not the treadmill.)
To me, this study seems similar to comparing the healthiness of cod liver oil with goat cheese salad. I suspect ounce for ounce, cod liver oil is healthier, but which would you feel inclined to ingest more of?
Still, anyone who wants to get in shape through cleaning up is free to come over to my apartment and work on the mess.
